Digital marketing is an integral part of any business, big or small. However, for entrepreneurs who are just starting out, it can be seemingly impossible to know where to begin. Paid advertising is one of the most effective ways to get a business noticed in its early stages, but most entrepreneurs are not marketing experts and the requisite research can be extremely time-consuming. How do you know your business is ready to start running digital ads? Which digital ad platforms would be best to reach your potential customers? How do you create an account, structure it effectively, and build compelling ads? And, should you just hire an agency to do this for you?

To answer these and other questions related to digital advertising, Sydney White, the owner of Vertical Ledge and host of The Vertical Podcast, recently interviewed Joe Kim, the founder, and CEO of Frontside Consulting. Watch the full episode below.

“When I started out I had my hands everywhere because I didn’t know where to spend my money.” - Sydney White

In 2018, Sydney and her husband Andrey co-founded Vertical Ledge, a retail display company that has grown over five years to include multiple products focused on modern, sleek merchandise display solutions. As a business owner whose skills and talent lay outside the realm of digital marketing Sydney had no idea where to begin with promoting their business in the online ecosystem.

During the interview, Joe shared his insights and expertise on the basics of digital advertising. They discussed topics such as when to start running ads, the key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor, the most common advertising platforms (Meta, Google, etc…), and some pros and cons of each. They also discussed some common mistakes that small business owners make when setting up their digital advertising, and why it may be beneficial to hire a company to help with these efforts.

“There is this whole machine on the platform that is not looking out for your best interest.” - Joe Kim

Another key point was the importance of choosing the right advertising platform for your business and being wary of the pitfalls. Joe and Sydney discussed some of the most common search and social advertising platforms (Google Ads & Meta Ads Manager) and some ways that a digital advertising novice could go awry and inadvertently spend way too much or simply waste their ad dollars.

Overall, the podcast proved to be an insightful and informative discussion for small business owners looking to get started with digital advertising. Joe's expertise and experience in the field provided valuable insights and actionable tips for anyone looking to grow their business through paid advertising.
